Andrew & Sheena, DerbyThis is the most amazing place. We spent the whole week just exploring the Hartland Peninsula.
The Hart Inn, Hartland, EX39 6BL – www.thehartinn.com
The Hart is a lovely village inn with bags of character. The menu is diverse and fresh with pub grub favourites alongside dishes to suit the more adventurous among us. Their Sunday lunch is a real treat! From Cheristow, it’s about a 25-30 minute walk to the Hart across farmland and woodland – you will definitely need your wellies! – or it’s approximately 10 minutes in the car.
The Bush Inn, Morwenstow, EX23 9SR – www.bushinn-morwenstow.co.uk
The Bush Inn is a 13th century free house in a beautiful location just off the south west coast path and about 12 miles south of Cheristow along the A39. Using fresh local produce, the menu changes with the seasons. Perfect for a lunch time panini or a more indulgent evening meal. Outside, there is a wooden play area to entertain the kids while the adults take in the spectacular sea views.
The Wreckers Retreat, Hartland Quay, EX39 6DU – www.hartlandquayhotel.co.uk/wreckers-bar
The Wreckers Retreat at the Hartland Quay Hotel is a really atmospheric hideaway in one of the most unspoilt and secluded locations you could care to find. The bar is filled with relics of wrecks and other seaside gems conjuring up images of the wreckers and smugglers who would’ve propped up the bar in days gone by. The food is fairly standard pub fayre but the hospitality is excellent.
The Hoops, Horns Cross, EX39 5DL – www.hoopsinn.co.uk
The Hoops is a real landmark along the North Devon link road. You will pass it on your way from Cheristow to Bideford (or on the way back!) and it’s well worth a stop. Their food is locally sourced and the wine list is endless!
Or if you prefer to eat in, try the Square Chip fish and chip shop in Hartland Village for an excellent variety of locally caught fish to takeaway and some of the tastiest chips in North Devon!
