When Raynor and Moth Winn embarked on their transformative 630-mile journey along the South West Coast Path, they carried everything they needed on their backs, sleeping in their tent and facing the elements with remarkable resilience. Today, inspired by their extraordinary story and the film starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, you can experience the same dramatic coastline and life-affirming adventure, but with the comfort and security of returning to our North Devon dog-friendly holiday cottages.
Why Cheristow Cottages is Your Perfect Salt Path Base Camp
Just 1.5 miles from the legendary South West Coast Path, Cheristow Farm Cottages provides everything that Raynor and Moth couldn’t carry in their rucksacks: warmth, comfort, security, and crucially for dog owners, spaces where your four-legged companion can rest and recover after days exploring the same inspiring landscapes.
The Strategic Location Advantage
Our position on North Devon’s Hartland Peninsula puts you in easy reach of some of the most spectacular sections featured in The Salt Path memoir. Unlike Raynor and Moth, who tackled the entire route in sequence, staying at Cheristow allows you to pick the most rewarding sections for you, returning each evening to comfortable surroundings, to plan the next day’s adventure.
It’s a 1.5 miles walk from Cheristow Farm Cottages to join the South West Coast Path, or of course you can drive to different starting points along the way.
North Devon Dog Friendly Cottage Features That Enhance Your Salt Path Experience
Each of our five dog-friendly cottages is great for walkers, with a level of comfort the Salt Path pioneers would have loved.
The Granary, our biggest walker and dog-friendly cottage for Salt Path explorers, has an enclosed garden, where dogs can decompress after challenging coastal walks. Sea views maintain your connection with the coast, there’s space to spread out your walking gear, and direct access to countryside walks too.
The Milking Parlour, the Linhay, The Stables and The Tack Room are all ideal for those following The Salt Path as they are single-storey so no more climbing after long walking days! The Milking Parlour and The Stables also have enclosed garden areas, accessible, without steps.
Every dog-friendly cottage, apart from the little Tack Room, has a comforting wood-burning stove – as well as central heating – so you and your dog can relax by the light of the fire after your day’s exertions.
And – importantly for many: the cottages share a Spa Room with its hot tub and sauna where Guests can book private sessions to relax and unwind with a soak and a steam …
The Emotional Journey Enhanced
The Salt Path resonates so deeply because it demonstrates how physical challenge in beautiful surroundings can provide profound emotional healing. Sharing this experience with your dog adds another layer of meaning, as their unconditional companionship and natural ability to live in the moment enhances the mindful aspects of coastal walking that proved so valuable to Raynor and Moth.
Cheristow provides an environment for relaxation between adventures; enclosed gardens, a peaceful rural setting, and comfort levels to support rather than distract from your Salt Path experience.
Planning Your Salt Path-Inspired Adventure
Unlike the Winns’ epic continuous journey, staying at Cheristow allows you to create a more sustainable, enjoyable Salt Path experience tailored to your and your dog’s capabilities.
If you’re not a seasoned, confident walker, you could start with a gentle introduction, taking local countryside walks from your cottage, then joining the Coast Path for a manageable distance; then tackling a more challenging section like Hartland Point to Hartland Quay; include recovery and reflection days with village walks, pub visits and shorter walks… it’s not a race!
Practical Benefits That Matter
The Salt Path memoir honestly depicts the physical and practical challenges of long-distance coastal walking. At Cheristow, many of the practical challenges post-walk are met – by warm, comfortable cottages with well-equipped kitchens, baths, showers, secure storage for walking equipment, facilities for cleaning muddy boots and paws, areas for drying wet gear, fresh water supplies of course. On the physical front: be aware and take care, paths are steep, rocky and slippery in places, and the weather can be severely wet, cold and windy. It can be gloriously, spirit-liftingly bright and warm too…
