Exploring North Devon with Your Dog

Walks Directly from Cheristow's dog friendly holiday cottages

One of the greatest advantages of staying at Cheristow’s North Devon dog friendly cottages is the immediate access to some of North Devon’s most spectacular walking routes. You don’t need to drive anywhere – simply step outside your cottage door and begin your adventure with your four-legged walking companion.

The Coastal Path Adventure

Our most popular route takes you directly from Cheristow to join the legendary South West Coast Path. This moderate walk covers 1.5 miles each way to reach the coast path, taking around 30 to 45 minutes depending on your pace. The terrain includes farm tracks, country lanes, and coastal grassland, with some uphill sections that provide a good workout for both you and your dog.

This route follows ancient tracks and quiet country lanes, leading you through traditional North Devon farmland before joining one of England’s most spectacular coastal walking routes. Once on the coast path, you can explore in either direction, with dramatic clifftop views and endless opportunities for photographs.

The Village Pub Circuit

This delightful circular walk covers 2.5 miles and takes between 1 to 1.5 hours, following country lanes, farm tracks, and village paths with easy to moderate difficulty. The route takes you through the heart of Hartland’s countryside, ending at one of our local dog-friendly pubs where you and your companion can enjoy a well-earned rest.

The walk passes through traditional Devon farmland, offering glimpses of rural life unchanged for generations. It’s perfect for a lunchtime adventure with a refreshment stop, and the circular nature means you’ll return to your cottage without needing to retrace your steps.

The Countryside Ramble

For those seeking gentler exercise, numerous countryside routes branch directly from our lane, offering various options from 1 to 4 miles depending on your preference. These easy walks take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours and follow quiet country lanes, farm boundaries, and permitted field paths.

These peaceful walks offer traditional Devon hedgerows rich in wildlife, opportunities to spot local birds and other creatures, gentle gradients suitable for dogs of all fitness levels, and multiple turning points so you can make your walk shorter or longer as the mood takes you.

The Headland Explorer

For the more adventurous, this route leads directly to Hartland Point, covering 3 miles each way with moderate to challenging difficulty. Allow 2 to 3 hours for this walk, which follows coastal paths, rough grassland, and includes some steep sections that will challenge both you and energetic dogs.

This spectacular route offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Devon, taking you to the remote lighthouse with opportunities for wildlife spotting and multiple rest points with breathtaking vistas. The challenging terrain is perfect for confident dogs who enjoy varied landscapes.

Essential Walking Information

The best times to walk include early morning for peaceful countryside experiences and late afternoon for dramatic coastal lighting. When tides are low, you’ll have better beach access where applicable.

Always bring plenty of water for both you and your dog, along with waste bags which are essential on all walks. A basic first aid kit is wise for minor scrapes, and don’t forget your mobile phone, though signal can be patchy in remote areas. Suitable footwear for varied terrain is important for your comfort and safety.

Weather Considerations

North Devon weather can change quickly, especially near the coast. Check forecasts before setting out and be prepared for strong coastal winds, sudden rain showers, muddy conditions after wet weather, and hot summer temperatures that require extra water for your dog.

Local Walking Etiquette

Please keep dogs under control around livestock and use designated stiles and gates. Respect private property boundaries and follow the Countryside Code at all times. This helps maintain the excellent relationships we have with local farmers and landowners.

Returning Home

After your walking adventures, you’ll appreciate returning to the comfort of your cottage, where you can rinse muddy paws, dry wet coats by the wood-burning stove, and plan tomorrow’s adventure while reviewing the stunning photographs you’ve captured.

We’re always happy to suggest specific routes tailored to your interests and capabilities during your stay.
