There is a special satisfaction in finishing a bracing walk along North Devon’s dramatic coastline and finding the perfect spot to refuel, with your canine companion. The Hartland Peninsula is not just about breathtaking views; it also has some very special dog-friendly places to eat and drink.
For those in search of a pint of local ale in a historic pub or a cream tea with a view, these are some of the best haunts that promise a warm welcome for both owners and their dogs.

Hartland Abbey Tea Rooms
The original Abbey was built in the 12th century – do visit the beautiful gardens (sorry, no dogs in the fascinating House). The tea rooms are in the old kitchen and there’s dog-friendly outdoor seating in the sheltered courtyard. Much of the produce for teas and lunches is sourced locally/from the walled garden. Open March – October
Docton Mill Gardens & Tea Room
In a tranquil valley 3miles from Hartland, Docton Mill Gardens & Tea Room is known for its award-winning cream teas, its light lunches and beautiful gardens. An idyllic spot. Open March – October
For Dog Owners: Dogs on short leads are welcome in the gardens and in the outdoor seating area of the tea room. The setting is perfect for a relaxed stop maybe after the walk to Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall (indoor seating may be reserved for visitors without dogs, so this venue is ideal for fair-weather days).
For a Village Coffee Stop: The Old Bakery, Hartland
On Hartland’s main square, The Old Bakery is a family-run coffee shop for breakfast, lunch and cake. “Well-behaved dogs welcome.”
The Point Kiosk, Hartland
A welcome, seasonal gem on the coast path near Hartland Lighthouse, The Point Kiosk at Hartland Point is generally open from April to September. Tables are all outdoors so it’s ideal for dogs… have fresh water, a coffee, an ice cream, or maybe a fresh panini – while gazing out at the wild Atlantic… seals come to the bay.
